Chapter 23: Gynecologic Emergencies Practice Questions

About this Chapter 23 practice test

Part of the Medical Emergencies practice questions exam area.

This page holds 175 free practice questions for Chapter 23, Gynecologic Emergencies, covering female reproductive anatomy, gynecologic assessment, vaginal bleeding, ectopic pregnancy, PID and STIs, ovarian cysts and torsion, sexual assault care, toxic shock syndrome, and gynecologic trauma. They are written for paramedic and EMT students working through Nancy Caroline's Emergency Care in the Streets, 9th edition. Every question shows the correct answer with a short explanation as soon as you tap, so you learn while you test rather than waiting until the end.

Study it two ways: the 10 Question Blitz, a quick round where every right answer lights a siren and any misses lead into Lights & Sirens, a 5-in-a-row drill on that section, or the full 100-question test drawn at random from the whole chapter. After each test you get a score and a section-by-section breakdown. Progress on the full test is saved on your device, so you can stop and pick up later.

Sample questions from this chapter

Combined hormonal birth control pills prevent pregnancy mainly by:

  1. A. Killing sperm in the vagina
  2. B. Suppressing ovulation
  3. C. Blocking the fallopian tubes for good
  4. D. Causing the uterus to contract

Answer: B. Suppressing ovulation
Estrogen-progestin pills suppress the hormone surge that triggers ovulation and thicken cervical mucus. They do not kill sperm (spermicides do) and do not permanently block the tubes (tubal ligation does).

A woman with lower abdominal pain and dizziness says she cannot be pregnant because she had her tubes tied. You should:

  1. A. Still consider an ectopic pregnancy
  2. B. Rule out pregnancy based on her history
  3. C. Assume the pain is from her bladder
  4. D. Ask her to take a home test later

Answer: A. Still consider an ectopic pregnancy
Tubal sterilization can fail, and when pregnancy occurs after it, a high proportion are ectopic. Pain with dizziness in this setting should be treated as a possible ruptured ectopic.

Most ectopic pregnancies implant in the:

  1. A. Cervix
  2. B. Fallopian tube
  3. C. Ovary
  4. D. Abdominal wall

Answer: B. Fallopian tube
More than 90% of ectopic pregnancies are tubal, usually in the ampulla. Cervical, ovarian, and abdominal ectopics are rare but can also bleed heavily.

How students use this page

Most students use the 10 Question Blitz for daily practice and take the full 100-question test in the days before a class exam or NREMT practice. Lights & Sirens after a blitz is the fastest way to close gaps the night before a test.

Every question in this chapter is also listed by section, with answers, on the topic pages above. See all paramedic topics or take the NREMT paramedic practice test.
